The Asheboro Open 51 Grand Champion
NM Chris Mabe of Charlotte, North Carolina
November 2009
NM Chris Mabe is on the warpath this year to win the 2010 North Carolina Grand Prix.
Asheboro was his first battle--and a tough one at that! Greensboro's Josh Lawson held him to a draw, but he ultimately prevailed with 2.5 points and $105.00 in cool cash. Later he dined with friend Norm Pruitt who chesspooled with him from Charlotte. We hope he left a bit of that stash with his friendly Asheboro waitress!
At our request, Chris graciously provided scores from his North Carolina Open exploits, where he clinched 1st place in the 2009 Grand Prix by narrowly edging out FM Ron Simpson. These and other games from this tournament will be published soon in the NC Games Database.
Congratulations to NM Chris Mabe--a great guy who also happens to be a great chess player!

First Place, Candidate's Section
Charlie Carerros of Charlotte, North Carolina
November 2009
Charlie Carerros was also a man on a mission, and came to Asheboro looking for his share of NC Grand Prix points. After winning "an extremely difficult game" in round two with Dana Daves, he faced another grueling match with Ian Haigler for round three. Charlie finished in style with a perfect 3-0 sweep, and 105 good reasons to smile.
Now for the PUNCH-LINE!!! Charlie Carerros currently leads the field with four NC Grand Prix points! Friend Chris Mabe commented, "Looks like I have to play catch-up again!"
Way to go, Charlie. Nice guys do get paid!
