Some Thoughts on The Asheboro Open VIII

from William "Tom" Hales, Organizer & Chief TD

The Big Tournament experience is back on track!  This month we had a very respectable turnout of 20 players, with some of North Carolina's top players on board.   I want to thank everyone who took time from their busy schedules to support The Asheboro Open VIII;  we could not do it without you!  NC Chess Icon John Timmel (2058) topped Championship Section which included Charlotte's Patrick McCartney (1987) and Huntersville's  Gary Newsom (1957).  We want to welcome Tanner Hogue back to Asheboro.  Young Hogue earned 95 rating points for his dominating performance in the Candidate's Section.

Asheboro Chess Club has negotiated dates with Days Inn through December 2006.  These are posted on www.ncchess.org.

We will work hard to keep bringing you the best tournament value for your dollar.  I am pleased to announce that for 2006 some other tournament directors will be filling in so I can get a chance to play.  Asheboro's own Rick Upchurch is slated to run things

for February.

I want to thank John Davis for his help setting up Friday night.  I really can't say enough about all the fine folks that help make this tournament possible, including Robin Johnston, Rick Upchurch, and Mark Stout.

We are sponsoring an advertisement in Chess Life starting in February 2006.  We hope this will give us a boost in attendance.  Thanks to everyone who has supported our tournament so far.  This has been a great year for Asheboro, and for North Carolina Chess!  Come see us on February 4th for The Asheboro Open IX!

Sincerely,

William "Tom" Hales, Assistant TD
