The Asheboro Open 52 Grand Champions
Tanner Hogue (left) and Robert Spurrier
December 2009
Tanner "T-Rex" Hogue went Jurassic on the competition and wound up splitting first place honors with former NCCA President Robert Spurrier. Each earned $102.50 with 2.5 points each. Nick Spurrier made his father proud and earned some "chess cred" by upsetting NM Maurice Dana in round one.
The Asheboro Open turned into a family affair with four Father-Son combinations: Robert Spurrier and Nick Spurrier, Paul King and Robert King, Walter High and David High, and last but never least Shawn Spencer and Ryan Spencer. Wait, there's more! How about our sibling combos? Statesville Simul Sultans Will Campbell and Grace Campbell lit up the scoreboard, while Greensboro's Kevin Chen and younger brother Derek Chen gave their opponents plenty to think about...
At our request, T-Rex Hogue provided his game scores. I found all three games entertaining...wait, was that a GM draw in round three? Look for these jewels in the NC Chess Games Database. "Modest Bob" Spurrier decided against revealing his masterpieces, which is unfortunate. His "grind it out" win in round three revealed a chess acumen that must be respected and acknowledged. Perhaps his opponent might make this game available? Stay tuned...
Congratulations to our December 2009 Grand Champions!

The Asheboro Open 52
First Place, Candidate's Section
Joshua Taylor (left) and Grace Campbell
December 2009
Joshua Taylor and Grace Campbell are two of Asheboro's most consistent players, putting their considerable chess skills on the line month after month. (Maybe that is how they got good?) They split first place to win $102.50 with 2.5 points each. For "Amazing" Grace Campbell, this was a three-peat performance which boosted her rating up to 1721! Each gave up a single draw to Asheboro's own Jordan Wood, who was undefeated and finished with 2.0, just shy of the cash.
Congratulations to these two gifted players!

The Asheboro Open 52
First Place, Club Section
Yimo Chen
December 2009
Why share when you can win it all? Yimo Chen took no prisoners on his second foray into Asheboro territory, sweeping the Club Section at 3-0 and winning $140.00. "Nothing but Net!!" Young Yimo was all smiles after his well-deserved victory earned him 115 rating points.
I predict great things from this talented player!
