Some Thoughts on The Asheboro Open XVII
from William "Tom" Hales, Organizer & Chief TD
October is NC Open month, so were expecting a smaller turnout. Many of our regulars were not playing, and we certainly missed them! Still, I was delighted to see such a strong turnout of twenty two players. Asheboro owes a debt of gratitude to NM Craig Jones, who coordinated a convoy of TEN players with military style precision. His effort turned a potentially "off month" into a great success. Thanks, Craig!!
We want to welcome some new players to The Asheboro Open: Stephen Pizzo, Rodney Folz, Caroline Folz, Robert Jackson, David Jackson, Theodore Arapoglou, Ryan Terpolilli, and Max Terpolilli. We hope you had a great time, and will return to play again soon.
The Championship Section was exceptionally strong this month, with many former TAO Champions in contention:
FM Ron Simpson, NM Craig Jones, Jacob Parrish, and Eugene Tiselsky. In the end, the top two players battled it out for the Championship. Congratulations to FM Ron Simpson for winning the Championship Section with his perfect
3-0 performance. Second place turned into a three way tie with Craig Jones, Charles Yu, and Charlie Hall taking the honors.
The Candidate's Section had an unusual number of drawn games, which resulted in a four way split for 1st place. Stephen Pizzo, Connor Labean, Rodney Folz, and Andrew Dejong shared the top spot with 2.5 points each.
Two brothers, Robert and David Jackson, took the Class prize with 2.0 each. Congratulations to all winners!
Attendance at The North Carolina Open was UP this year, and I think NC's monthly tournament directors deserve some credit for this upswing. There has never been a better time to be a North Carolina Chess player,
and we're just getting started. Your continued support is the key to the success of NC Chess. Please support your local club and weekend Swiss tournaments when you can. Together, we can take NC Chess to another level of excellence.
I want to thank everyone who helped make The Asheboro Open XVII a success: Special Assistant John Davis
arrived early (around 8:00am), and helped with final setup. Special thanks to Craig Jones for his help in filling the seats! As always, I want to thank YOU, the chess players of North Carolina, for your support of this tournament.
I promise to keep working hard to bring you a great tournament each and every month.
The Asheboro Open XVIII is November 11th! Come be a part of the great chess revival in North Carolina!
Sincerely,
William "Tom" Hales, Chief TD
