Some Thoughts on The Asheboro Open XXIII
from William "Tom" Hales, Organizer & Chief TD
Attendance was down from March (perhaps due to some unfortunate conflicts). At 16 players,
we had the same number from April 2006. I am still optimistic about this year's turnout, though.
If chess has taught me anything, it is that you can't expect to win every time. Consistency is the
key, along with continual improvement. Asheboro continues to make the grade.
My apologies for getting this out so late. I had a car accident on March 29th, and I have been
playing catch up since! So I will make this month's commentary a bit shorter.
I can't neglect welcoming several newcomers to Asheboro: Russian Lev Zilberter and his son
Vladamir Zilberter, Professor Stephen Maynard, and Scholastic hopeful Ben Zhang.
One of the things that keeps The Asheboro Open exciting is a constant influx of new chess talent.
Thanks for including us in your plans!
Congratulations to all winners--you deserve a better tribute than I am penning this month. You are
the vanguard of North Carolina chess, and your participation is the key to our success. Thanks!
There is some quite interesting VIDEO in our multimedia lineup this month. While I am certainly no
Stephen Spielberg, it is my hope that you will find the videos fun and entertaining. My goal is to enhance
your tournament experience. As with my photo taking, I strive to remain merely a fly on the wall. I am
careful to be a tournament director first, and a producer a distant second. I welcome your feedback!

I will need a bit more time to update the Tournament Games Section. I appreciate your patience!
The Asheboro Open XXIV is May 12th! Now is the time to make those chess memories that will last a
lifetime. Come be a part of it all at TAO XXIV!
Sincerely,
William "Tom" Hales, Chief TD
