Some Thoughts on The Asheboro Open XXIV
from William "Tom" Hales, Organizer & Chief TD
Attendance was awesome this month--up 25% from 2006. We had 21 players (if you count
me as a house player). I have been thrilled to see the explosive growth of small Saturday
Swiss tournaments in North Carolina. No matter where you live in the state, there is an
event within driving distance. There are still a few geographic holes, but for the most part
North Carolina has reached a saturation point.
I don't know about you, but more chess is a good thing in my book! There are so many
good choices, the only problem for me is that I'd love to attend them all.
While this month's report is a little late, GET READY for a NEW level of service starting in
June 2007! Things are going to get FASTER, FOLKS. What can YOU expect? As always,
we will do everything possible to get The Asheboro Open USCF rated in less than one day
(often by the same evening). Feedback from players has proven to be quite positive in
this regard.
Still, I am always looking for opportunities to improve YOUR experience in Asheboro.
I have NOT been satisfied with the speed of update for our Results & Photos. Starting in
June 2007, my goal is to have everything done within one day. I believe it is possible,
due to some more efficient methods that are being implemented.
Can it be done? Can you really expect a tournament to be USCF rated, with photos,
commentary, games, and video in one day or less? Stay TUNED!! We are going to
attempt the seemingly IMPOSSIBLE. Why? Because you deserve FRESH news, and
that's what we intend to bring you.
I have some FANTASTIC NEWS! One of the things beyond our control has been
some problems with our venue at Days Inn. There has been a change in ownership,
and we are expecting dramatic changes. Some of these changes were already in place
at this tournament. The NEW OWNERS have a different attitude: that our players
deserve peace & quiet. There were no significant noise problems at The Asheboro
Open this month. They are also zealous about cleaning and maintenance. I
believe we can expect a complete TURNAROUND.
We came close to changing venues in the past due to ongoing noise problems, and
maintenance issues. I was determined to hold out for a while, since no business could
continue to operate in such a manner. This change has been a long time coming, and
we couldn't be happier.
Before I go, I want to thank Jonathan McNeill and Jacob Parrish for their help with setup
this month. Also, Dr. Walter High assisted me with directing duties. Last but NOT least,
Tanner Hogue became a roving cameraman for us. Much of the great footage in our video
coverage this month is due to his volunteer effort.
I think the Mother's Day comments were awesome!
The Asheboro Open XXV is June 9th! Come see for yourself why we call this the
BIG TOURNAMENT experience. The LPO is just around the corner. Now is the time to
put some ZING into your game!
Sincerely,
William "Tom" Hales, Chief TD
